OLD SOUL. SLOW DAYS.

Through the arch.
Out of the everyday.

Set on The Digey in St Ives’ Downalong quarter, Old Arch Cottage brings together a fisherman’s history and the comforts of a thoughtfully renovated home.

Reclaimed ships’ beams, exposed stone and old pilchard-smoking recesses tell the story of a cottage dating to 1760. Settle into the window seat, gather around the dining table, or slip out for a morning on Porthmeor Beach.

PART OF THE STORY OF ST IVES

A famous arch.
A history of our own.

1760The cottage’s story begins.

Old Arch Cottage takes its name from the landmark attached to it: the low granite arch at Hick’s Court, one of St Ives’ most recognisable sights. Here, a holiday address becomes part of the town’s history.

The arch marks the entrance to the court where George Hicks once lived. He served as Portreeve — the town’s chief official — in 1611 and 1624. The Grade II listed arch bears a plaque installed for the Festival of Britain in 1951.

Local stories connect its low height with smugglers and mounted customs officers. That is folklore; the surviving stone, the plaque and the court’s connection to Hicks are the tangible pieces of the story.

Our cottage dates to 1760. Inside, ships’ timbers, exposed stone and old pilchard-smoking recesses carry that maritime character into the present.
